What's the maximum number of characters allowed in a domain name?

Can you remember any super long domain names you've come across while browsing the web? There are some pretty long domain names on the world wide web today. Ever wondered what the maximum number of characters that are allowed in a domain name is? Have you ever come across a web site that sports a domain name with a ton of characters in it? Until recently I never wondered what the longest domain name was. Now I know.

Right now the internet allows for a maximum of 63 characters in a domain name. This can be a combination of letters and numbers. To my surprise, there are over 500 different domain names that use 63 characters in their name. Unfortunately, just about all of the domains that use 63 characters in their name are on "parked pages" like this one below.

www.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.com

Using Google when seeking out sites that have 63 characters in them will enable you to find a few.

For now here's another one of these 63 character named websites that's actually a free email provider:

www.abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijk.com
